    the Ad Hominem fallacy is pretty easy to understand (the personal attack) but I didn't know there were different kinds of ad hominem:

    I particularly appreciate what is called "tone policing": which focuses on the emotion behind the expression and not the argument itself.  

    if i had a nickel for every time i've seen this in action i'd lose my shit because i'd be so rich, but then people would tone-police me and wouldn't believe how rich i was. :wry:

    Yeah, this makes me go off a bit.  It's very common for people to dismiss an argument just because it's passionate, as if the emotion necessarily and always compromises the rationale behind the argument.
